Not Everything Ages Like Fine Wine: The Real Reason Your Antiques Aren’t Selling

"But My Kids Said They'd Want It Someday…"
It’s one of the most heartbreaking patterns I see in this line of work — and if you’re reading this, you might already be living it.
You have a basement full of cherished items. A curio cabinet overflowing with figurines. A dining room hutch packed with crystal, silver, fine china … and maybe even a few pieces you insured for far more than they’re worth today.
And yet, your children or grandchildren? They don’t want any of it.
This isn’t a failure on your part. But it is a sign that the antique market has changed, and dramatically.
The $10,000 That Disappeared
Let me share a real moment from one of my recent appointments. It says everything about where we are right now.
I was visiting a woman whose father had received an offer of $10,000 for a collection of carved ivory figures — about twenty years ago. She had been holding onto them ever since, waiting for the day her son might want them.
But that day never came. And now? Due to regulations and a shift in market values, those ivory pieces are essentially worthless.
I had to be the one to tell her. And it was tough.
She wasn’t just disappointed. She was overwhelmed with regret.
That’s the cost of waiting too long. It’s not just about the money. It’s the emotional toll of realizing the value you imagined… is gone.

The Antiques Nobody Wants Anymore
Over time, I’ve seen trends come and go. But these days, there’s a very real list of once-popular items that are almost impossible to sell. And knowing this list can save you time, stress, and heartbreak.
Here are just a few of the biggest culprits:
- Wildlife-Related Pieces (Ivory, Tortoiseshell, Coral, etc.)
These items may have once been seen as exotic and valuable. Now, due to legal restrictions and environmental awareness, they’re largely unsellable. Ivory in particular has gone from high-dollar to hands-off-practically overnight.
- Porcelain Figurines
You know the ones: Hummels, dolphins, Royal Copenhagen… that entire generation of decorative figurines. They’ve gone from $100 to $10-or even $5-if you’re lucky. Why? Today’s younger buyers don’t want to spend their lives dusting shelves. It’s not laziness-it’s lifestyle. The market just isn’t there anymore.
- Ornate Furniture
Heavy, ornate pieces, especially round mahogany or oak tables, are a tough sell. People move more. They downsize. They don’t want something that takes four people to lift and doesn’t fit with modern décor.
- Old-Fashioned Artwork
Even if the frame is beautifully gilded, ornate equals outdated in today’s market. The days of gold-on-gold walls are behind us.
- Antique Dishes and Glassware
Sure, they’re beautiful. But if it can’t go in the microwave or dishwasher, today’s families aren’t reaching for it.

Why This Hurts -- And Why It Doesn't Have To
I’ve walked through homes where, after hours of sorting and evaluating, I’ve had to say, “I’m sorry… there’s nothing here worth selling.”
And you know what happens next?
They hug me.
Not because I brought good news. But because I brought clarity. Because now they know: they’re not giving away the Mona Lisa. They’re not making a tragic mistake. They can let go.
That peace of mind is everything.
It’s freedom. And in many cases, it’s the first step toward reclaiming your space, your time, and your emotional energy.
What You Can Do Right Now
Here’s what I always recommend:
- Talk to your kids. Don’t wait for a “someday” that may never come. Get clarity now.
- Get an honest evaluation. Knowing what something is truly worth — emotionally and financially — empowers your decisions.
- Let go with intention. Some things are best sold in groups. Some should be donated. Some are best kept — but only if they bring you joy.
And if you need help? That’s what I’m here for.
